Close-to-close moves of the front-month contract over the last year. Natural gas is shown on wider thresholds because it is one of the most volatile liquid markets there is. Highlighted: the tightest threshold that still fired three times a month or fewer. 251 trading days measured; updated 11 September 2026.

Oil moves on a calendar, then ignores it

Crude has scheduled catalysts, the weekly US inventory report on Wednesdays and OPEC meetings, and unscheduled ones, which are the ones that produce the largest days: supply shocks, shipping disruptions and weekend geopolitics that open Sunday evening with a gap. Over the last year WTI moved about 1.66% on a typical day and more than 5.28% on one day in ten; the largest single day was 16.41%.

That shape argues for a percentage alert rather than a price level for most people. An 8% move in 24 hours fired about 1.2 times a month over the past year, which is roughly the cadence of events actually worth reading about. A price level still earns its place if you hold energy stocks or an oil ETF and have a level in mind where you would act.

WTI or Brent

WTI is the US benchmark, priced at Cushing, Oklahoma; Brent is the international one and the reference for most of the world's seaborne crude. They move together almost all the time, and the spread between them widens when US inventories or export capacity are the story. Set the alert on whichever one your holdings or your news feed reference. If you are not sure, WTI is the one US financial media quote.

Why energy belongs next to your crypto

Oil is the clearest macro input most portfolios have. A spike feeds inflation expectations, which moves rates, which moves the dollar, which moves every risk asset including Bitcoin. Watching oil in the same list as your coins and stocks turns a headline into context: a 10% crypto drawdown on a day oil gapped up on a supply shock is a different event from one that happened while everything else was quiet.

How to set an oil alert in the app

Open the Markets screen, switch to commodities and pick WTI, Brent or natural gas, or search for them. Choose a price level or a 24-hour percentage move, pick push, Telegram or both, set quiet hours if you want overnight moves held until morning, and save. Alerts are evaluated on our servers with the app closed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the oil price alert free?

Yes. The free plan includes three active alerts across every market, price and 24-hour percentage alerts, and push or Telegram delivery. Pro is $2.99 a month for unlimited alerts.

Which oil price does the alert use?

The front-month futures quote from Yahoo Finance: NYMEX WTI or ICE Brent, in US dollars per barrel. It is the price financial news quotes, not a retail fuel price.

Do oil alerts fire at the weekend?

No. Energy futures are closed from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening US time. Weekend news shows up as a gap at the Sunday evening open, which is exactly when a percentage alert set above the typical day fires.

What threshold should I set on oil?

Use the table above. WTI moved about 1.66% on a typical day over the last year and more than 5.28% on one day in ten, so an 8% alert, which fired about 1.2 times a month, is a sensible start. Natural gas needs a much wider threshold.

Can I get alerts on natural gas and copper too?

Yes. Natural gas, copper, platinum and palladium are in the same commodities list, with the same alert types and delivery options.
