Check the developer, not the app

App names and icons are trivially copied; the developer account is much harder to fake convincingly. Tap the developer name and look at what else they have published. A legitimate exchange or wallet has a coherent portfolio and a long history; a fake usually has one app published recently.

Cross-check by going to the company's actual website — typed, not searched — and using the store link they publish. This is the single most reliable check available, because it starts from a source you control.

Read the reviews backwards

Sort by most recent and by lowest rating rather than reading the top reviews, which are the easiest to manipulate. Fake apps typically show a burst of generic five-star reviews posted close together, alongside recent one-star reviews from people reporting exactly what happened to them.

Also check the review count against the app's claimed popularity. A supposedly major exchange with four hundred reviews is not a major exchange.

The permission and behaviour tests

A price-tracking app has no reason to request contacts, SMS, or accessibility permissions. Accessibility in particular can be abused to read your screen and interact on your behalf, and is a common vector for credential theft.

Then the decisive test: any app that asks for a recovery phrase or private key is malicious without exception. There is no legitimate app of any kind that needs one, and this single rule prevents the large majority of catastrophic losses.

Costs that quietly eat the return

Frictions are small individually and substantial cumulatively. Between the chart and your account sit trading fees, the spread between bid and ask, slippage on anything larger than a small order, network fees when moving assets, and conversion costs if you are not trading in your home currency.

None is large in isolation. Together, on an actively traded account, they routinely consume a meaningful share of gross returns — and unlike market moves, they are guaranteed. This is the strongest practical argument for trading less: every round trip you avoid is a cost you certainly save, against a gain you only might have made.

Slippage deserves particular attention because it is worst exactly when you most want to act.
